Had to pick between a Warn and a Smittybilt winch last weekend - went with the Warn and wow
I was installing a new bumper on my 98 Tacoma last Saturday and needed to finally commit to a winch. It came down to the Warn VR Evo 10S and the Smittybilt X2O 10k. I spent like 2 hours reading forums and watching videos at my buddy's garage in Phoenix. The Smittybilt was like $350 cheaper but I kept seeing posts about the solenoid box failing after 6 months. So I shelled out $899 for the Warn and got it mounted Sunday morning. First real test was pulling a stuck F150 out of a wash bed near South Mountain yesterday. Thing pulled smooth as butter, no hesitation, no grinding noises. Has anyone else run into the Smittybilt solenoid issue or was I just paranoid about the price difference?

Nope, you weren't paranoid. That Smittybilt solenoid thing is pretty common from what I've seen on the trails around here. Guys spend all that money to save a few bucks then end up rigging a new solenoid box with zip ties and swearing at it on a Saturday afternoon. You made the right call, even if your wallet is still sore. Nothing worse than a winch that won't winch when you're up to your knees in mud and it's getting dark. Enjoy that smooth pullin'.
