Just figured out a trick for airing down tires on the trail

I used to always break out my dedicated tire deflator tool, but last trip out to Moab I forgot it at home. Got stuck using the little nub on my tire pressure gauge and it took forever. Then I realized if you take the valve core out with the little removal tool on most gauge caps, the air just blasts out in seconds. Worked way faster than my fancy deflator. Has anyone else tried this method or do you stick with the regular tools?

Oh man that's genius, I did the same thing in Sedona and wondered why I ever bothered with my deflator tool! Now I just pop the core out and count to ten, it's so much simpler.

Three Moab trips ago I ditched my deflator for the same reason @gibson.sarah mentioned. Pop the core, count to 12, screw it back in. Done.

Pop the core and count? I've done that a few times but my count is usually different for front vs rear tires since the weight is split. How do you guys handle that, do you just eyeball it or do you have a different count for each corner? I'm always paranoid I'll go too low and have to air back up on the trail which is a pain with just a little pump. Especially on rocky stuff where you really need to dial in that pressure.
