Old timer at the gas station swore by tire chains over studs, he was right in the snow

I was in Flagstaff last winter and this retired logger told me to ditch the studs and just run good chains on my Tacoma, I thought he was crazy. After sliding sideways on 89A with studs, I threw on a pair of chains and it was a night and day difference on the packed ice. Anyone else had better luck with chains than studs on mixed snow and bare pavement?

Boy, that's a pretty strong take. I mean, sure, chains have their place, but calling it a "night and day" difference on packed ice? That seems like a stretch to me. Studs are still the go-to for straight ice in my experience, and running chains on dry pavement is a whole different kind of headache, not to mention the wear and tear on your drivetrain. Maybe that old timer was right for that one specific road on that one specific day, but your mileage is seriously gonna vary depending on what you're driving and where. I'd take that advice with a grain of salt before you go dropping money on chains.
