That dusty old tire carrier on my Jeep finally clicked after 8 years of hating it
I got my 96 Cherokee back in 2016 and always thought the factory swing out tire carrier was the dumbest thing ever. It rattled, made the back door hard to open, and just seemed like an afterthought. Then last weekend I was out near Moab and got a flat on a rocky trail at sunset. Popped the spare off in under 30 seconds without even having to crawl under the truck or dig out a jack from under all my camping gear. It hit me right then that the thing was designed for exactly that situation, not for daily driving convenience. Now I'm thinking about greasing up the hinges and actually keeping it maintained. Has anyone else had a moment where something you always complained about turned out to be smart engineering?

Wait, you mean that stupid rattle box actually served a purpose this whole time? I feel like a total fool for cursing mine for years. That moment when you figure out the engineers weren't totally drunk when they designed it. I had the exact same epiphany last fall when I swapped my spare in a muddy ditch in like 45 seconds flat. Now I just keep the hinges greased and deal with the door being a little stiff. It's kind of a trade off but for trail use it's actually genius.
