Update: I quit airing down to 15 psi on washboard roads after a chat at the gas station in Moab
For the last 3 seasons I've been that guy who drops to 15 psi the second the pavement ends, because that's what the old forum threads always said. Last week in Moab I was airing down at the station on Main and a guy in a beat up Tacoma asked what I was running. When I said 15 he laughed and said he runs 22 on washboard because at 15 his sidewalls heat up and he's pinched two tires in 4 seasons out there. I figured he was full of it, but he pulled out his phone and showed me the temps he logs with one of those infrared guns, and his 22 psi runs were like 30 degrees cooler than mine on the same road. So on Kane Creek the next morning I aired down to 20 instead and the ride felt almost the same, maybe a touch firmer, but my tires stayed cooler the whole day. Now I'm second guessing everything I thought I knew about going as low as possible. Any of you run higher than the old 15 psi rule on long washboard stretches, or am I overthinking one guy's numbers?
