Client asked for a rebrand, then ghosted me for 6 weeks

A restaurant in Austin paid half upfront for a full logo and menu redesign, then vanished after I sent the first drafts. Finally got a reply saying they "went a different direction" but want the deposit back. Anyone else deal with clients who think a deposit means a refund if they change their minds?

I read somewhere that deposits basically cover your time and effort, not a promise of the final product. If they ghosted you for six weeks, they should be paying you extra, not asking for a refund.

Did you see that piece about freelance contracts saying deposits are basically a kill fee? Sounds like your take lines right up with that.
