My old CD at a Chicago shop told me to stop chasing awards and start chasing repeat clients
I used to think award submissions were the whole point of a good book, but she pointed out that 3 of her biggest accounts came from clients who just kept coming back, not from any trophy. So I stopped paying $150 per entry for a year and put that money toward a case study page instead. Has anyone else seen awards lead to actual work, or is it mostly just agency bragging?
I heard a guy on a podcast say he won like 6 design awards in one year and got zero new clients from it. Then a client told him straight up she never even looked at the award page. She hired him because a friend said he was easy to work with. That stuck with me. Now I look at who actually writes the checks, not who hands out the trophies.
