Vent: I quit storyboarding in color after a client in Boston approved a spot based on my ugly grey boxes
Back when I was at a small shop in 2014, I used to spend 6 hours on every storyboard, colored pencils, shading, the works. Then a client meeting in Boston went sideways when they spent 20 minutes arguing about the blue in a thumbnail instead of the actual joke. On a hunch, I started sending rough grey boxes with one caption per frame and no color at all. First pitch with the grey boxes got approved in 11 minutes. The client actually said it helped them see the timing instead of getting stuck on the art. I still feel weird sending work that looks like it came from a fax machine, but my turnaround time dropped from 3 days to half a day. Has anyone else had a client respond better to rougher boards, or did I just get one weird account?
