Shoutout to the pinch of salt I tossed in my grounds after 3 bitter pots
Last week I brewed three pots in a row with a new bag of beans and every single one tasted like burnt cardboard. Out of pure frustration I threw a tiny pinch of salt into the grounds right before brewing, mostly because I was too cheap to toss the bag. The next cup came out smooth and almost sweet, and I just sat there at my kitchen table in Akron staring at the mug like it had lied to me. Now I salt every pot and my wife thinks I have lost it. Has anyone else tried this, and does it actually work on darker roasts or just the lighter ones?
Man, this reminds me of when my grandma used to put a pinch of salt in her cheap instant coffee and swore it was the only way to drink it. We all made fun of her for years until I tried it myself one desperate morning and had to call her up and apologize. I have not tried it with a real brew yet but hearing your story makes me want to dig out that old dark roast bag sitting in the back of my cabinet. Something about salt just kills the bitter edge without making it taste salty, which sounds like straight up kitchen magic. Your wife can think you are nuts all she wants, but a smooth cup beats a smug spouse any day.
