The cheap filter basket that exposed my 4 year tamping mistake
I bought a $12 bottomless portafilter basket last Tuesday just to see if my shots were really as even as I thought. First pull with it and coffee sprayed everywhere like a sprinkler. I'd been tamping with the tamper tilted slightly toward the back for years without noticing. The mess on my counter in Columbus showed me channels forming on the right side every single time. I started leveling with my finger before tamping and the difference was night and day. Now I'm wondering what other basic habits I've been faking for years. Anyone else get humbled by a cheap tool that revealed a core skill gap? What's the next budget gadget I should use to check my work?
