Broke a torque wrench calibrating a 737 brake assembly last Tuesday

I was doing a routine brake job on a 737-800 and went to torque the main axle nut to 650 ft-lbs. My snap-on digital wrench flashed error code E3 and then just stopped working. Called the tool truck guy and he said the internal sensor fried because I was using a cheater bar on it. I had no idea that would kill the electronics. Anyone else ruin a good torque wrench by pushing it past its limits?

900 is way too close to what mine was rated for. I had a CDI torque wrench that was rated for 250 ft-lbs max and I tried to do a lug nut on a CAT loader that was supposed to be like 400. The click mechanism locked up solid and I had to use a pipe wrench to break it free. @johnson.paul you're right about click types being more forgiving but they still have limits. The worst part is I didn't realize the damage until I went to use it next time and it just clicked at half the torque setting. I sent it back to CDI and they said the spring inside was permanently deformed. Cost me half the price of a new one just to have it rebuilt. Now I keep two wrenches one for light duty and one for heavy stuff so I never push a tool past 80 percent of its rating again.

Switched to a good click-type wrench after that happened to me.
