My lead at the Wichita hangar made me redo a fuel line 3 times because of one stupid habit
About 6 months ago I was working a Cessna 172 annual at our shop in Wichita and I kept having to pull a fuel line I'd already torqued because I kept forgetting to put the chafe tape on before I ran it through the firewall. Third time my lead walked over and didn't even yell, he just said "you're building it backwards in your head, think about the last thing you touch first." I sat on a stool for 10 minutes and wrote the whole line routing out on the back of a work order, tape first, fitting second, torque last. Sounds obvious but I'd been doing it off and on for 2 years without ever once writing it down. Now I sketch a tiny numbered list for anything that goes behind the firewall or under the floor, takes 30 seconds and I haven't had a rework since. Curious if anyone else has a "build it backwards" trick or if I'm the only one who needed a guy in his 60s to spell it out for me.
