Rant: My lead told me to always torque the oil filter by hand and I thought he was nuts
He said, 'You'll crack the housing if you use a strap wrench on these new PT6s, trust me.' I ignored him for months until I was working on a King Air in Denver last winter. Sure enough, I put a wrench on it and heard a tiny crack. Had to order a whole new filter housing and delay the flight. Now I just hand-tighten like he said. Anyone else have a stubborn habit they had to break?

Ugh, I feel that... I used to crank down on those plastic coolant caps with a wrench. Snapped the neck right off one on a cold morning and dumped coolant everywhere. Learned that lesson the hard way too.

Yeah, the old Cessna 172 oil filters were the same way. I put a wrench on one in Pensacola and stripped the threads right out of the adapter.

Remember the oil filter housing is aluminum, not steel. That tiny crack you heard is a classic failure from over-torque. @mila_harris had the same basic problem with a different part.
