Read a report that the average age of the US commercial fleet is over 15 years now... that's a lot of old birds we're keeping in the air.

Flew on a DC-9 last year that still had a working payphone in the back. The maintenance on these old planes is no joke, they get inspected down to the last bolt. It's a real credit to the crews that keep them flying.

I was on a 737-800 last month that had those old ashtrays in the armrests. The whole cabin just felt worn out, like the seats had been sat in for a million miles. You could hear every little creak during taxi. It's wild to think that plane was probably in high school when I was. Makes you appreciate the mechanics keeping it all together, lol.

Ever wonder if older planes are less safe? I used to get nervous about the creaks and worn seats too. But honestly hearing how long mechanics keep these things flying actually makes me feel better now. They must check every part so carefully to keep that certification.
