Showerthought: an avionics shop tour in Wichita made me rethink my tool cart setup
I tagged along with a buddy to an avionics shop near Wichita last month and expected to be bored, but their benches got my attention. Every mechanic there had their tools laid out on shadow foam with a spot for each one, and a guy named Ray said he found a dropped socket in 10 seconds instead of 20 minutes. I always figured that kind of setup was just for show, but after watching them work I came home and cut foam for my own cart that weekend. Took me about 4 hours with a hot knife and it already caught a missing 3/8 wrench before I left the hangar. Curious if anyone else here uses shadow boards or foam, and if so what thickness has held up for you?
