Showerthought: The worst corrosion I ever saw was on a Cessna 172 in Florida last month.

Pulled a panel near the wing root and it looked like someone poured salt water in there for fun. Had to replace a whole section of longeron, about 18 inches. Took three days just for that one spot. Anyone else find crazy stuff in coastal planes?

Flew just fine for years" is a TERRIFYING way to look at it. That hidden rot is a total gamble. It might hold, or it could fail on the next hard landing or bit of rough air. Finding it means you caught a major safety problem BEFORE it turned into a disaster. Calling that "fine" is how people get hurt.
