TIL a fuel truck driver at the Santa Fe airport waved me off a sump check, and I almost signed it anyway
I was doing a preflight on a Cessna 182 last Tuesday when the driver told me he'd drained the sumps on that plane two days prior, so I skipped my own check, then found water in the left tank when I looked anyway, and I've been wondering since how many guys just take that word and move on.
How many of us got burned by trusting someone else's word on something we're supposed to check ourselves? I used to be the guy who figured a fuel truck driver knows the plane better than I do after a quick walk around, so why bother draining anything again. Then a buddy of mine got water in his tank from a plane that had been "checked" the day before, and it scared me straight. The whole point of a preflight is that it's yours, not somebody else's, and a driver draining sumps two days ago tells you nothing about what's in there right now. That little bit of water you caught in the left tank would have found the engine at the worst possible time, so good on you for looking anyway.
