A guy on the train ruined an anime for me with unsolicited spoilers, sparking a debate on fan etiquette

I was wearing a obscure series hoodie, and some random commuter started dissecting the finale without asking if I'd seen it. On one side, hardcore fans believe displaying fandom is an open invitation for unfiltered discussion, no holds barred. On the other, I think it's basic decency to confirm someone's viewing progress before dropping major plot points. This happens all the time with coworkers too, where one person assumes everyone is caught up just because they mentioned liking anime. I've seen family dinners derailed when my cousin spoils a show my aunt is slowly watching. It makes me wonder where the line is between sharing passion and being inconsiderate. Should public interactions default to spoiler warnings, or is the onus on fans to avoid sensitive topics? I want to hear where you all stand on this mess.

Shouldn't we treat unsolicited spoilers like violating a social contract, where enthusiasm overrides empathy? From what I've seen, that assumption of shared progress ruins more community goodwill than it builds.

I accidentally told my coworker the big twist in that new series before he finished episode three. I mean, I was so pumped I just blurted it out like a total idiot. It's exactly what you're saying, where my excitement just steamrolled over his chance to enjoy it. Now I feel bad every time I see him, and I've learned to keep my mouth shut until I'm sure. Spoilers really do burn bridges even when you mean well.

Totally get this. It feels disrespectful, like someone crashing a movie you are watching. That shared surprise is part of the fun. Spoilers take that away before you even get a chance. It is not about the story detail itself, but losing the chance to find out naturally. The excitement should be for everyone at their own pace. Rushing to talk ruins that for people who waited.
