Appreciation post: I read that only 4% of anime get a second season, and now I see why my favorites keep vanishing
I was scrolling a stats page called Anime News Network last month and saw a number that stuck with me: something like only 4 percent of all anime get a second season. I sat there thinking about all the shows I loved that just ended on a cliffhanger and never came back. Some people say that's fine because the manga or light novel keeps going, so we can just read the source. But others argue that a good anime can pull in way more fans than a book ever could, so studios should finish what they start. I get both sides, but it bugs me when a show blows up overseas and still gets dropped because the blu ray sales in Japan were just okay. Like I watched a fantasy show two years ago that trended online for a month, and still nothing. So here's my question: is it more fair to blame the studios for chasing quick money, or should fans just accept that anime is basically one big ad for the source material?
