Hot take: I thought the 'skip the filler' advice for One Piece was a bad idea

For years, I saw people on forums telling new viewers to use a guide to skip all the filler episodes in One Piece. I always thought that was missing the point, like fast-forwarding through a road trip. Then my buddy Mark, who has zero patience, tried to watch it and quit after about 50 episodes because he said it dragged. I finally convinced him to try again using one of those 'essential episode' lists. He blasted through the Arlong Park arc in a weekend and called me, actually excited, saying he finally got why people love it. The filler skipping gave him the momentum to actually engage with the core story instead of burning out. I still think some filler is fun, but for a show with over 1000 episodes, that advice has some real merit for certain people. Has anyone else had a friend completely bounce off a long series, only to get into it after cutting out the fluff?

Yeah, I totally get that. I tried to get my sister into One Piece the normal way and she gave up around Syrup Village. It just felt too slow for her. So next time, I found a list that was basically just the big story beats and major fights. We skipped like, all of the Warship Island filler and some of the early dragged out parts. She got hooked once we hit Baratie and then she was all in. Sometimes you just need that faster pace to see what the big deal is.

That method would ruin the journey for me.
