Hot take: the 'crying in anime' scenes we all praise are actually the weak ones

Last week I rewatched Clannad: After Story with a friend from Ohio who'd never seen it, and while everyone swears by the famous breakdown scene, I found the quiet moments of refusal far more moving, so am I the only one who thinks the loudest emotional beats get overrated in this community?

That episode 18 scene with Nagisa's dad hit me way harder than the big breakdown, glad someone else sees it that way.

That's not really what "overrated" means here. You're saying the loud scenes are celebrated, but the quiet ones just aren't as talked about, which is different from saying the loud ones aren't good.
