My buddy quit One Piece at episode 3 and told me 'it's just pirates yelling,' so I finally get why people bounce off long shows
Sat with my friend Marcus on his couch in Baltimore watching the first few episodes of One Piece, and around episode 3 he just turned to me and said the whole thing was pirates yelling at each other. I laughed it off but it bugged me for days. Here's the thing, he wasn't wrong about those early episodes. The pacing is rough, the yelling is constant, and none of the stuff that makes it great shows up until way later. I've been telling people to watch it for years and never once stopped to think about what the first hour actually feels like to a new viewer. It made me go back and rewatch the beginning and honestly he has a point. Now I tell people to start around episode 30 or just read the manga first, which feels like cheating but it works. What's the show you always defend that you secretly know has a terrible opening arc?
