Serious question, I tried to explain the plot of Evangelion to my mom over coffee and she just asked if the robots had feelings.

I ended up talking for like 20 minutes about the themes instead of the story, which I guess is the real discussion. Has anyone else had a chat that completely derailed your usual anime pitch?

Honestly that's a better question than most people ask. Felix_hayes64 is wrong, you didn't dodge it, you answered it perfectly. My go-to move now is to just pick one big idea, like loneliness or running from pain, and use that as the anchor. Trying to explain the whole story just makes everyone's eyes glaze over.
