Showerthought: Does watching subbed or dubbed change how you remember a show?

I always thought subbed was the only way to go, you know, for the 'authentic' voice acting. But after binging Cowboy Bebop dubbed with a friend last month, I realized I remembered way more specific scenes and jokes than when I watched it subbed years ago. The problem was I kept missing visual details while reading subs, but the dub let me actually watch the animation. So which side do you land on for memory retention, or am I just overthinking this?

That's a solid point about missing visual details with subs. Maybe it's less about sub vs dub and more about how your brain processes two different things at once. Like, are you actually remembering the show better or just remembering the words you read?

You're overthinking it a bit, @rileyb61. Either way you're still watching the show, not writing a dissertation on it.

Oh totally, I get that. I had this whole thing with Attack on Titan where I was so into the subs... trying to catch every little detail in the dialogue. And then I realized I had no idea what half the fight scenes actually looked like because I was just reading the bottom of the screen. It's like my brain splits in two and one half is just the word part.
