That one week where the whole anime forum turned into a shipping war
About two months back, the main thread for a popular romance show got locked after hitting 500 replies, all because of one couple. Half the people were posting huge essays about why the main characters were perfect together, using scenes from episode 3 as proof. The other half kept saying the side character was a better fit, calling the main guy 'toxic' (which, okay, maybe a little). It got so heated that mods had to step in and make a whole new rule about 'character analysis vs. personal attacks.' My own post asking if we could just enjoy the animation got downvoted into oblivion. It was a wild few days where you couldn't talk about the plot without someone jumping in about relationships. Has a fandom debate ever totally taken over your favorite show's discussion space like that?

You said it got locked after hitting 500 replies, but I'm pretty sure the mods pulled the plug around 430. The "500 reply auto-lock" rumor spread after the fact. The rest tracks, though. That rule they made was so vague it just moved the fighting to the show's fan art thread instead.

I was refreshing the thread when it locked at 437 replies. The mods posted a reason about "repeated rule violations" not a count. The 500 thing was just what people guessed after. The new rule was a mess, it basically just told people to go argue about ships in the fan art section instead.

Actually I was there when it hit 500 and the auto-lock happened. The mod post about it is still up. The new rule did seem to just push the fight somewhere else though.
