That weird thing about the 'anime is trash' crowd who still watches 50 shows a season

I was scrolling through a Discord server last Saturday night and noticed this one guy who constantly posts about how anime fans are cringe and how the medium has gone downhill. But then I looked at his activity log and he had watched like 12 episodes of different shows that same day. It got me thinking about how there's this whole subgroup of people in anime discussions who seem to hate-watch everything. I even saw a whole thread on Reddit recently where someone had a spreadsheet tracking every 'bad' show they finished just to complain about it. Do these folks actually enjoy being miserable or is there something else going on there? Has anyone else noticed this trend and figured out why they do it?

I used to hate-watch shows until I realized it was way more fun to just drop them.

Some of these people are the most dedicated fans in the community, they just show it in a negative way. That spreadsheet guy? He's putting in more effort than most positive fans do keeping up with seasonal releases. There's a guy on my MyAnimeList who gives everything a 6/10 but has watched 400 shows this year alone. He can tell you exactly why each show failed and what it should have done better. Maybe that's its own kind of passion, just expressed through criticism instead of praise.
