TIL my coworker thinks 'filler' is a good thing

We were talking about One Piece and he said he actually likes the slower arcs because they make the world feel bigger. I always skipped them, but his point about building atmosphere made me pause. Anyone else have a take on filler that changed your mind?

Totally agree with @harper693, some shows use that slower pace on purpose to make the world feel lived-in (like those long walks in Ghibli movies). It's not always padding, sometimes it's just a different kind of storytelling.

Seriously, filler is just lazy writing to pad the runtime.

Depends on the show though. Sometimes those quiet moments build the world or let characters breathe. Calling it all lazy ignores when it's done on purpose to set a mood. A story doesn't always need to be pedal to the metal.
