I finally chose the used dryer over the cheap new one, and my 3 PM Tuesday customer got a lesson in patience
Had to pick between a $75 Whirlpool with a squeaky drum and a $150 no-name model with a 30 day warranty, I went with the squeaker because it was a 2008 model with all metal gears, and after swapping the idler pulley and belt in 40 minutes it runs like a dream, has anyone else gambled on an old machine and won big?

Metal gears on a 2008 model is the real deal. Those new machines use plastic everything, and they crack the second you look at them wrong. Squeaky drum just means it needed a $20 part, not a whole new unit. I did the same thing with a 90s Kenmore washer, replaced the drain pump and it's been going strong for five years now. Old stuff was built to be fixed, not thrown out.
