Rant: dropped $180 on a refrigerant scale last month and it already paid for itself on one job
I do mostly fridge and AC work in the Toledo area, and I put off buying a digital refrigerant scale for years because I figured my gauges and the old dial scale were close enough. Well, back in June I did a recharge on a walk-in cooler at a pizza place and ended up guessing at the charge weight because the dial scale was drifting. Customer called back 10 days later, unit was running warm again, and I had to eat the return trip and top it off for free. So I finally bought a decent digital scale off a supply house for around $180. Last week I used it on a residential split system, weighed in the charge to the ounce, and the pressures landed dead on the first try. That one callback I avoided probably cost me two hours and a pound of 410A, which is not cheap these days. I know it sounds like a small thing but if you are still eyeballing charge weights with a dial scale, spend the money. Curious what other tools you guys bought that made you wonder why you waited so long.
Whoa, hold on, you were using a dial scale for years and just crossing your fingers on every charge? That blows my mind. I get that gauges can get you close, but drifting on a walk-in cooler and eating a free return trip over a guess? That had to sting. Weighing in to the ounce and having pressures land dead on the first try is the part that gets me. Why do we all wait until a callback slaps us in the face before buying the right tool?
