Can we talk about how I swore by deep planting for trees?
Seeing root flare issues changed my mind for good.

Honestly, why give up on it entirely? I get the root flare problems in wet areas, but deep planting saved some trees for me. My heavy clay soil dries out so fast, and an extra inch or two kept my new oak and maple from frying last summer. It seems like it totally depends on your dirt and the weather where you are.

Girdling roots don't care about a drought later.

You said deep planting saved your trees in clay soil, but how serious are root flare problems really? An inch or two might not be a big deal.
