Certified arborist told me my pruning cuts on the maples in Portland were wrong, and now I'm second guessing everything
Six months back I was doing reduction cuts on three silver maples in a yard near Portland, and a certified arborist stopped while walking his dog and told me I was leaving stubs too long on the branch collar. Side A says long stubs are fine because the tree seals them off on its own, but side B says you're basically inviting decay and sprouting by not cutting closer to the collar. I switched to shorter cuts after that and honestly the new growth looks cleaner, but two of the maples threw out way more epicormic shoots than before. Was he right, or did I just trade one problem for another? Anyone else had a stranger's feedback flip how they cut?
