Climbing spikes on removals only, until a buddy proved me wrong

Three years ago in Austin I swore spikes were fine on any tree we were taking down. Last month a buddy showed me how much damage they cause to the cambium on a live oak we were just trimming, and I saw the bark peeling off like paper. I watched him lace up the spurs and climb with a proper flip line, and it clicked that removals only was the right call. Now I keep an extra set of friction gloves in the truck for anyone who forgets theirs. Has anyone else switched their stance on spikes after seeing the tree response up close?
