Climbing spikes on removals vs pruning, am I wrong for this?

I used spikes on a 30ft maple removal last Tuesday and a guy on another crew tore into me for it, saying it's lazy even for removals. But I've seen crews spike everything including live branches, and the tree's coming down anyway so does it matter? What's your call on where the line is?
