Dropped $180 on a tree climbing course that taught me less than one afternoon with a retired climber
Signed up for a weekend climbing course near Asheville back in March, $180 for two days. The instructor kept us on the ground doing knots for 6 hours while a retired climber named Roy watched from a bench. On day two Roy pulled me aside and showed me how to actually move through a canopy in 20 minutes, stuff the paid guy never mentioned. I get that safety basics matter but 6 hours of knots when I already knew them felt like a waste of a Saturday and my money. Has anyone found a course that actually gets you in the tree on day one, or is this just how it goes?
Can relate to paying good money to tie knots on the ground all day, my own knot skills peaked at the bunny ears shoelace thing. Six hours of that when you already know them sounds rough, but Roy showing you canopy movement in 20 minutes is funny and also kind of the whole lesson. I would look for smaller classes with one or two people, since the big ones seem to keep everyone grounded for insurance reasons. Some places do run day-one tree time if you call ahead and ask how much of the course is actually up in the air.
