Found out a mature oak can pull 50 gallons of water a day and I've been way off on my watering schedule
I was reading through a soil and water handout from a workshop in Boise last month and it said a big mature oak can move around 50 gallons of water up through the trunk on a hot day. I always figured it was way less than that, so I've probably been underwatering my clients' trees during dry spells for a while now. This is for a full canopy tree in summer, and it obviously drops off once it cools down or the tree goes dormant. For those of you doing deep root watering on mature oaks, are you actually trying to hit that much volume, or do you just soak the drip line and call it good?
