Got schooled on a Bradford pear removal in Knoxville last Tuesday

I was taking down a big one that had split, my usual method. The homeowner, an older guy, came out and said, 'Son, you're gonna shake the whole house loose like that.' He showed me how he used to notch the heavy limb on the house side first, then drop the rest. Did it his way and the trunk settled like a feather. Never seen that trick in 8 years climbing. Anyone know other old-school methods for tricky drops near structures?

Catch yourself noticing the same pattern everywhere once you see it. Old timers have this whole library of tricks nobody writes down. Like how my grandma could fix any sewing machine with a butter knife and some oil. It's not just tree work, it's hands-on knowledge that dies when people stop passing it along. Younger guys like us think we know all the moves from YouTube or school, but that's just the basics. The real stuff, the little adjustments that save your ass, that's sitting in some retired dude's garage. Shame we don't ask more questions before they're gone.

That old guy's trick is just a good way to get a barber chair and wreck the house.

Ever actually seen it happen, or just guessing?
