Last Tuesday I climbed a 100-foot oak to remove a widowmaker and found an entire squirrel pantry stuffed with black walnuts in a crotch cavity

The branch came down clean but then I got pelted by like 30 walnuts raining on my helmet, has anyone else ever discovered a stash like that mid-climb?

Is it really that big of a deal though? Squirrels have stashes all over the place and they lose some every year to rot or weather. @rubys80 is probably right that they were mad, but they'll find more walnuts somewhere else. A single year's supply is a drop in the bucket for critters that bury nuts in every spot they can reach. It's not like you burned down their whole nest or something.

Not really sure it's the same thing though. The acorn stash sounds like a gathering spot the squirrels kept using, while those walnuts were clearly a targeted hoard you accidentally hit the jackpot on. Those squirrels must be PISSED they lost a whole season's supply in one unlucky climb.

Saw a video a while back where a guy found three garbage bags worth of acorns in a single tree hollow. Sounds like you got the full cost of that discovery paid out in nuts.
