Leaning oak on Maple Street has folks split on what to do

Some say it's a hazard and needs to come down, others want to cable it. What's your take on situations like this?

Actually, cabling works best for young trees, not old oaks.

Yeah wait, arborists cable mature oaks all the time if they're still mostly healthy. It's not just for saplings.

Of course this old oak is causing drama on Maple Street. Classic neighborhood stuff. @richard226 is right that cabling young trees makes more sense, but an ancient leaning oak is basically a ticking time bomb. Spending cash to cable it seems like a band-aid on a broken leg. If it's already that far gone, just take it down before it does real damage. Nobody wants to explain to their insurance why a tree crushed their garage. But hey, maybe some folks enjoy the excitement of living on the edge.
