Old foreman swore by hand saws for pruning, finally got why

My first boss back in 2011 near Eugene kept yelling at me to put down the chainsaw for anything under 4 inches. I thought he was just being cheap with fuel. Last week I did a big deadwood cleanup on a red oak and grabbed my hand saw for the small stuff out of pure spite. Took maybe 20 extra minutes total but the cuts were way cleaner and I didnt scare the homeowner half to death. He was right about not wanting to hear a saw run for a two inch branch, and now Im wondering how many other old school tricks I ignored. Anyone else have a mentor whose advice you dismissed for a decade before it clicked?
