Old forester told me to leave the sawdust on the stump and I ignored him for 5 years

Buddy of mine did the same thing with a big oak in his backyard. Left a six inch tall stump for like four years cause he thought it looked rustic. Last summer a storm came through and that whole thing just snapped right at the ground line, rot had eaten through the whole base. He nearly had it fall on his shed. Now he tells everyone to listen to the old timers.

Gently correct something here - the rot doesn't actually work all the way down into the roots like people think. I've dug out plenty of old stumps and the rot usually stays in the above ground part, especially with conifers. The real issue is the stump becomes a doorway for bugs and fungus to get into the healthy roots below, but the rot itself stops at the soil line most times. Still a bad move leaving it though, just not as dramatic as it sounds lol.

Forester was right. Now you got rot working its way down.
