PSA: The old guy who taught me to prune at 16 told me to cut less, and I ignored him for 9 years
Ray ran the crew in Ashland and every time I reached for the saw he'd wave me off and say the tree pays you back for what you leave on it, which I thought was just old man talk. Nine years later I watched a homeowner lose a 60 year old red oak because I took a 14 inch limb off in one cut near Pullman and it sent up water sprouts that split in a windstorm two years after. Now I make every new hire stand there with the saw off and name every branch they plan to leave before they touch anything. How do you teach restraint to guys who just want to run the saw?
