Rant: Grafting these pear trees is turning into a nightmare.
After all that careful cutting and tying, the grafts just won't take and it's driving me crazy.

Apparently, pear grafts can be picky about the temperature when you do them. I remember reading that grafting too early in spring, when nights are still cold, often causes failures. Waiting for consistently mild weather might improve your luck.

That bit about consistently mild weather reminded me of my cherry grafting mess. I tried it during a fake spring week in March, but then a hard freeze hit. All the new grafts just shriveled up and died. Now I use the local dogwood blooms as my cue, since that means no more cold snaps. It's saved me a lot of wasted effort.
