Showerthought: Every new development on my street buries root flares.
Contractors just plop trees in holes without checking. It's lazy work that dooms the tree from day one.

Look at it from the nursery side though. Contractors have shovels and eyes, they can check and fix a deep root ball on site. Blaming the grower just lets the planting crew off the hook for not doing their job right.

Isn't it sometimes the nursery's fault too? A lot of trees are already planted too deep in their pots before they even get to the site. The contractor might not even see the root flare to begin with.
