That old oak I was supposed to remove last month is still standing

Got a call three weeks ago to take down a big oak in someone's backyard in Austin. Turns out the tree had a massive hollow section near the base, but the crown was still full and healthy. I decided to leave it up and told the homeowner to just let it die naturally instead of risking a bad fall. Has anyone else walked away from a job like that and felt good about it?

Bet on that hollow acting like a natural chimney and keeping the tree from snapping.

Friend of mine had a big oak like that in her yard... during a windstorm the whole trunk just split right open in the middle. Turned out the hollow went all the way down to the roots and water had pooled inside for years. It came down hard on her shed and took out half her fence.

Same here @jessica_robinson23, my old hollow maple survived that huge storm last year
