That storm damage in Austin got me thinking about root flare checks
Went to look at a friend's oak after last week's hail storm and noticed the root flare was buried about 6 inches deep. Mulch was piled up against the trunk like a volcano. I dug it out for them, but it made me wonder how many trees in my area have this same problem. Do you guys routinely check for buried root flares on service calls or only when there's a specific issue? I'm thinking about adding it as a standard part of my estimates.

Ditch the extra digging, honestly. Most oaks are tougher than we give them credit for, and messing with soil near the roots can do more harm than good if you hit something you didn't expect.
