The hinge pin on my climbing saddle let go 40 feet up a red oak in Salem
So there I was last Thursday, 40 feet up a red oak in Salem, and I feel this pop in my harness. The hinge pin on my saddle's leg strap just snapped clean off, no warning, no weird wear I could see. I had to hang there lanyarded in for 20 minutes while my ground guy tossed up a backup rig on a rope, which he missed twice, by the way. Ended up walking the last 15 feet down on my flip line alone and my hands were shaking so bad I couldn't even unclip my carabiner right. Now I'm eyeing every seam and rivet on my gear like it owes me money. Anyone else had a pin or buckle fail on them mid climb, and did you figure out why it went?
Did you check if that pin was rated for the load or just a hardware store replacement someone threw in? I'd bet half these failures come from a pin that looks fine but was never meant to take that kind of pull, and it slowly works loose till one day it just gives.
