TIL most people are planting arborvitae way too close together

Walked a new subdivision last week and counted 12 arborvitae hedges already browning out from lack of airflow. They were spaced like 2 feet apart, should be at least 4-5. How do you convince homeowners to wait for a mature look without cramming everything?

Man, I bet the soil prep is just as much the problem though. People dig these tiny holes and expect the roots to spread out in that hard clay, so even if the spacing is right they still end up choking themselves out from below.
