A museum volunteer told me to stop cleaning artifacts, and it changed my field notes

I used to scrub pottery sherds at the lab in Santa Fe until a conservator pointed out that I was erasing the micro-residue evidence. Now I only dry-brush and log every stain before anything else. Has anyone else had to unlearn a bad habit from formal training?

Doubt you ruined anything major, half the time those stains are just dirt anyway lol.
