Digging my first test pit, I switched from a trowel to a masonry pointing tool and the soil layers stopped smearing
I was working a site outside Tucson and kept mixing the stratigraphy because my trowel was too wide for the thin bands. A retired guy on the crew handed me his pointing trowel with a 1/4 inch blade, and I could finally see the ash lens clearly at 40 cm down. Anyone else have a hand tool that changed how you read a profile?
Was it the narrow blade that made the difference or the pointed tip letting you get right into those thin bands? I've been fighting the same smearing problem and always figured it was my technique, not the tool. How wide was your trowel before you switched?
