Got dragged to a dig site near Tucson and the trowel I borrowed had a 4 inch blade, never going back to the short one
So my buddy volunteers with a local archaeology group and he kept bugging me to come out to this site near Tucson last month because they were digging a Hohokam pit house and needed extra hands. I showed up with zero clue and he handed me a beat up 4 inch trowel, said the short 2 inchers were for kids. We spent about 6 hours screening dirt and I pulled out maybe 30 sherds, a couple of shell beads, and honestly I was hooked by lunch. But here is the thing, when I went back the next weekend another guy gave me a 2 inch and I felt like I was digging with a spoon, could not feel the edges of anything. The longer blade let me scrape a flat floor in the pit house way better without gouging it, and my screens stopped filling up with random clumps. Now I want to buy my own and I am looking at a Marshalltown 4 inch for like $18, but is that overkill for a volunteer who digs twice a month? Anyone else notice a big difference between blade lengths on actual features?
